Hazards, Disasters and Catastrophes

Disasters and hazards are very closely related however, they are not the same thing. A hazard is closer towards a warning or a threat of a disaster while a disaster would be the event itself. We could hear of a natural hazard in the news and how it could be likely to occur. While the next day after an event occurs we may see the damage in the news which would be the disaster itself. A catastrophe is more intense than a disaster as it is just a disaster on a higher scale. For example when a hurricane occurs but there is minimal danger the national guard would not be called and it could be labeled a disaster. Whereas a hurricane could occur and cause major damage and even death and the national guard could be sent to help. That would be considered a catastrophe.
